Nickel and Dimed

Barbara Ehrenreich’s book, Nickel and Dimed: On (Not) Getting By in America, depicts the encounters the writer experienced when she relinquished her great life and went covert in order to see with her own eyes how it feels to function for a time-based compensation of $6 to $7. Rather than essentially tuning in to the records of others, she chose to head out to Florida, Maine, and Minnesota, with the goal of accepting the job of a lowest pay permitted by law employee.Advertising We will compose a custom research project test on Nickel and Dimed explicitly for you for just $16.05 $11/page Learn More Ehrenreich worked and stopped in each area for about a month. In spite of the fact that she was working all day, she thought that it was difficult to address her issues sufficiently and she was frequently compelled to complete two employments one after another to make a decent living. The creator chose to go on this examination with the expectation of building up whether the measure of cash paid to low-wage laborers is sufficient for their food. Ehrenreich’s exposeâ' has uncovered such huge numbers of things to me concerning the circumstance of the low-wage laborers in America. Though the encounters that the creator experienced were enamoring, I didn't get the inclination that she truly foreseen to accomplish something in her precarious investigation. Be that as it may, in the wake of getting her perspective from her own encounters, the contrast between the rich and the poor has gotten much progressively evident to me. To begin her investigation, Ehrenreich chose to go to Key West, Florida, which was close to her home to attempt to discover a work there (Ehrenreich, 2008). Fortunately, she got enlisted to fill in as a server in a burger joint style eatery and found a proficiency loft thirty miles from the city to live in. In any case, the installment she got from the activity was not really satisfactory to continue her and pay for the following monthâ⠂¬â„¢s lease. Accordingly, she picked a second activity at a neighborhood lodging to fill in as a house keeper. Strikingly, she couldn't adapt to the two occupations. Ehrenreich then left the house cleaner position following one day and the server position likewise turned out to be similarly requesting. In this way, she left the place of employment even before the month's end. Subsequent to withdrawing from Florida, Ehrenreich went to Portland, Maine, where she figured out how to find a new line of work with The Maids, a private housekeeping administration, and she likewise filled in as a dietary associate in a nursing home in order to make a decent living. The two occupations constrained her to labor for seven days every week and she figured out how to stick it out until the month's end. She found that working with The Maids was both truly requesting and paying small wages. Moreover, she felt that the work was debasing to her. An outstanding encounter she depicts is the point at wh ich one of the servants got harmed while playing out her obligations and in spite of the fact that she ineffectively attempted to foil the typical activities at the private housekeeping administration, she figured out how to persuade the administration to give the harmed house keeper a free day. Serving in the nursing home, the creator ended up taking care of the requirements of the considerable number of patients in the entire Alzheimer’s segment. What's more, she dreaded committing any error that could make more damage her patients as she had little understanding on the job.Advertising Looking for research paper on american writing? It was difficult for her to get a loft in the city on th e grounds that the opportunity rate was short of what one percent. In any case, after energetic endeavors, she was utilized by Wal-Mart as a â€Å"softlines† laborer and she found a summary inn to remain, wherein compromised her security and legitimate rest around evening time. In this manner, to improve her states of living, she moved to a more pleasant lodging. The work at Wal-Mart was dreary and tedious, yet additionally amazingly low paying that made her to battle in addressing her needs. This made her to accept that the laborers at the organization are working themselves excessively hard contrasted with the small wages they get. Strangely, when she was leaving each activity in all the three areas, she never saw an emotional reaction from the laborers she uncovered to that her fundamental goal was to compose a book about her encounters. The representatives appeared to be up to speed such a great amount in their low paying employments that none of them indicated any enthus iasm for her genuine explanations behind abandoning the positions. Perusing the encounters that Ehrenreich experienced astounded and stunned me, also. Critically, it made me change my recognition about the people in America who make due on low-wage employments. In spite of the fact that I had the conclusion that people living in trailer lofts were thinking that its difficult to make a decent living, I had not completely imagined that they were living in terrible conditions that in any event, managing a trailer condo would appear to be troublesome. Worth referencing, I additionally thought about that people on low-wage occupation would be equipped for meeting at any rate their fundamental needs, for example, sufficient food and safe house. Notwithstanding, perusing the book quickly opened my eyes concerning how much those on the lowest pay permitted by law make a solid effort to manage the cost of the fundamental things, not referencing the extravagances. Bothered uncovers this issue through the encounters that the creator experienced in various areas in the United States. The bewildering exposeâ' that the creator makes has changed my conclusion with respect to various social issues. I concur with the author’s guarantee that lowest pay permitted by law representatives speak to the biggest, most humanitarian class of the American workforce on account of the numerous difficulties that they need to handle so as to survive.Advertising We will compose a custom research paper test on Nickel and Dimed explicitly for you for just $16.05 $11/page Learn More Notably, Ehrenreich’s contention has made me to understand that lowest pay permitted by law laborers in America are possibly one of the most disregarded fragments of the country’s workforce. The theme on how much an American laborer ought to be paid at least is frequently a dubious one (Waltman, 2000). The issue regularly lights banters in the social and political circles. In any case, as Ehrenr eich calls attention to, barely any people are truly intrigued by methods of improving the lives of the low-breadwinners. At the point when enactment is passed to expand the measure of the lowest pay permitted by law in the nation, the administration and others ordinarily give more consideration on the reaction of the businesses while ignoring the impacts of this in the genuine existences of the beneficiaries of the enactment. The book has prevailing with regards to uncovering this extraordinary arrangement of social separation that is as yet common in the American culture. Subsequently, the course of low-workers is still seriously hurt. Prior to perusing the book, I had the recognition that lowest pay permitted by law employments didn't require any â€Å"skills† to perform. Notwithstanding, the clarification that Ehrenreich gives has made me to suspect something. Ehrenreich, a columnist with a Ph.D. degree, found that difficult work was genuinely requesting, exhausting, emba rrassing, and required inconceivable demonstrations of strength, center, great and quick reasoning, and precision to perform. She likewise discovered that nonstop and repeating development prompts the danger of total injury issue (CT). For one to convey results as a lowest pay permitted by law specialist, one must have the option to suffer torment in order to hold a situation in a market with steady returns. What's more, Ehrenreich brings up the misbehaviors of the individuals in the administration position who make the entire experience of low-workers to be significantly progressively down and out. They regularly upset the representatives efficiency and force those they regulate to perform debasing and uninteresting obligations. In the book, Ehrenreich subtleties the issues and sufferings of the people who, either because of absence of experience or different causes, need to begin their vocations at the base by procuring low-compensation. Her clarification uncovers that they think that its difficult to get by, and significantly progressively hard to produce ways ahead. I would likewise anticipate that it should be loaded with difficulties and challenges. Notwithstanding, I am not sure if the creator anticipated that it should be so troublesome and I am likewise not certain if her experience was long enough to empower her make the affirmations or on the off chance that she put forth a valiant effort in her covert examinations. Regardless, as brought up prior, a large number of the issues she has raised are real. The interesting book, Nickel and Dimed, was elegantly composed and it merits perusing for opening the eyes of the perusers with respect to the lowest pay permitted by law work in America.Advertising Searching for research paper on american writing? What Were The Causes of The 1905 Revolution The Consequences of The Uprising Essays

What Were The Causes of The 1905 Revolution The Consequences of The Uprising Essays What Were The Causes of The 1905 Revolution The Consequences of The Uprising Paper What Were The Causes of The 1905 Revolution The Consequences of The Uprising Paper In January 1905 Russia was tossed into unrest activated by the occasions of Bloody Sunday. The foundations for the unrest are a blend of long haul issues and transient causes that made them all surface at once. Likewise they were numerous outcomes from this occasion on the individuals, Tsar and Russia itself. The reasons for the 1905 transformation in Russia can be followed back similar to 1861. The Tsar was the leader of Russia and managed via totalitarianism when Europe all in all was getting progressively vote based and liberal. Russia was a lot of medieval in the nineteenth century in the way that Serfdom despite everything existed. The Serfs were workers who were possessed by the Tsar, as indicated by law. The Serfs (80% of the populace) turned out to be displeased and Alexander II perceived this by conceding them their opportunity, through the Emancipation Act of 1861. He felt it was smarter to nullify Serfdom from above than to trust that the Serfs will free themselves from underneath. Looking back this brought on additional issues, as despite the fact that it was a significant advance in modernizing Russia, the conceding of restricted opportunity to the Serfs brought about them calling for additional rights, and along these lines a drawn out reason for the transformation of 1905. The Russian populace was comprised of a wide range in ethnic foundations, with more than 22 unique nationalities. Each gathering had their own traditions, culture and religion and seeked freedom. Alexander II attempted to compel Russian traditions, culture, language and religion upon them. This was known as Russification and was a drawn out basic issue in Russia. Alexander II set up constrained nearby specialists called Zemstva, which for the most part focused on agrarian issues. This made more prominent mindfulness among the individuals and a liberal class of Intelligencia was set up. They needed Russia to become just and contradicted the Tsars despotic principle and later got known as the Kadets. Their resistance towards him was a drawn out reason for the transformation. The Kadets approached accomplishing their points through ordinary strategies, while there were radical gatherings, for example, The Peoples Will. They felt Alexander II had relinquished his before changing strategies and killed him in a bomb assault in 1881. The unforeseen development implied that Alexander III, the Tsars child, became Tsar despite the fact that he was viewed as excessively youthful and distant from the individuals to govern Russia. Right off the bat he condemned the 5 professional killers to death and afterward introduced a time where all the past opportunities allowed by his dad were nullified, as he felt they were the purpose behind his dads passing. This caused extraordinary strain among the workers, nonconformists and progressives as they felt angry about Russia making a stride in reverse into medieval occasions. This absence of vote based system given to the individuals was a significant reason for the upset. Alexander III didn't concur with his dads changes and when he came to control in 1881, he set about smothering the workers and all resistance to the Tsars. His Russification arrangement constrained Russian culture on the 50 million non-Russians in the realm. The Jews additionally endured extraordinarily under his rule as Pogroms were sorted out assaults on the Jews which constrained numerous to emigrate. Restriction was likewise expanded and the opportunity of colleges was diminished. Alexanders botches lay in the way that the individuals had experienced opportunity under his dad, and now he was removing it once more. Upset was looming. There were numerous gatherings looking for upheaval, with the primary force being the Social Revolutionaries (SRs). During Alexanders rule fanatic resistance to the dictatorship additionally aged. The Narodniks endeavored to energize the workers against the Tsar, however fizzled on account of class contrasts. In any case, the Narodniks were to advance in spite of this underlying disappointment and they turned out to be exceptionally compelling in the twentieth century as he Bolsheviks. 1893-1903 was a period known as the incredible spray. This was animated by the changes of Sergei Witte, pastor of fund. He had faith in making Russian enterprises productive as the most ideal approach to carry it to the degree of industrialisation found in Western Europe. He accomplished his points through intensely burdening the laborers, who were at that point paying recovery installments ashore given to them under the Emancipation Act of 1861. This prompted discontent among the laborers and edging them closer to transformation. Workers ran to the urban communities during the incredible spray as occupations opened up which were more remunerating than agribusiness. This at that point made ghettos loaded with workers with an excessive number of individuals for too not many occupations. The financial downturn of 1903 caused tremendous issues for these urbanized specialists and their displeasure was a transient reason for the 1905 transformation. There was little efficiency and craving and neediness was overflowing and in January 1905 specialists started to strike in processing plants. To redirect consideration away from his household issues and to grow Russia while gaining an ice free port, Alexander III chose a quick military triumph over a simple adversary would enthusiastically cause the individuals to join together and overlook their complaints so he chose to begin war with Japan. The Japanese ended up being an exceptionally effective and canny battling power, whose naval force extensively beat and humiliated the Russian naval force. This set the Tsar on feeble political ground as he presently had egg all over from endeavoring to utilize war as a preoccupation from residential struggle. Russia didnt lose on account of their officers execution, but since of their military chiefs which the Tsar was one of. Military positions were given dependent on riches and renown, not by military strategic ability. These two elements were momentary reasons for the insurgency. A general strike in Russia happened in 1905, with both urban and rustic laborers fighting together. Father Gapon drove a gathering of laborers to the Winter castle with an appeal for changes for the Tsar. The dissent was a serene one and the laborers conveyed pictures and candles for the Tsar. Be that as it may, the gatekeepers took shots at the individuals, slaughtering one thousand and harming thousands more. This activity totally estranged the individuals and their faithfulness to the Tsar was no more. It was the political initiation of the majority. This slaughter, known as Bloody Sunday was the flash that began the 1905 upheaval. The way that it was the Tsar who requested the watchmen to shoot upon the protestors was huge as he was viewed as the dad of the individuals, in this way the individuals felt mad about his activities. This was the flash that touched off the insurgency; subsequently it took one occasion for the individuals to do what some needed to occur in any event fifty years back, the oust of the Tsar. The Tsar had consistently had the option to pound resistance as the primary gatherings, white collar class, laborers and laborers werent joined in their objectives yet now that just because they had become a unified restriction power, meant by the Union of Unions whose point was to frame an expansive based partnership. Along these lines the Tsar confronted immense issues and his administration consistently lost control of occasions and the nation was nearly insurgency as Social Revolutionaries and others affected rebellions nation wide, strikes made creation come to a standstill and push the nation to the edge of total collapse financially. By October the Tsar was confronting transformation against him so chose to yield to the powers of restriction and in doing so attempted and effectively split them. By presenting the October Manifesto, wherein he said all laws were to be endorsed by a chosen duma, he fulfilled the dissidents, whose point was to transform Russia into a sacred government, which it had appeared to accomplish. The administration at that point nullified land reclamation installments, making the laborers be fulfilled so just the laborers were left as resistance. Returning soldiers remained steadfast and squashed the laborers. There were numerous results of the insurgency. By December 1905 a significant number of the main agitators of the unrest were banished to Serbia. As referenced Russia was presently an established government, in principle. The Tsar never planned to let the Duma have any force and ready to assault him on the economy, so he a got a credit from France as an award for improving by presenting majority rule government. Since he was sheltered monetarily and had a devoted armed force, he presented the basic laws, wherein he again expressed that only he was the leader of Russia and all laws must be endorsed by him, along these lines making the Duma immaterial before they initially met in April-June 1906. Fund Minister, Sergei Witte was supplanted because of doubts of not being focused on the Tsar by Peter Stolypin, who became head administrator in 1906. He allowed worker out right responsibility for land. The Tsar was seemingly in a more grounded position than he was pre-upheaval because of separating of resistance, fulfilling laborers and got vengeance on the individuals who attempted to topple him, this was the principle outcome of the unrest. The 1905 Revolution was viewed the same number of as the outline for the 1917 Revolution.

Why Students Drop Out Of High School - 1499 Words

The concept of the American Dream is that anyone can do anything if they only put in enough hard work and determination to accomplish their goals. However, a barrier to this dream in society is the capacity to obtain a quality education. People who don’t acquire a high school diploma generally carry the burden of poorer health throughout their lives, a greater chance of being unemployed, have a higher chance that they will use drugs, and a higher rate of going to prison, compared to people who attain at least a high school education. In addition, a large portion of those who do get a high school diploma, don’t continue on to get an associates or bachelor’s degree in college. Study shows that one of the main reasons that students drop out†¦show more content†¦By pointing out and criticizing mistakes, kids are losing the ability to be creative, and schools focus more on academic ability and scholarly jobs, instead of creative talents and innovative ideas that young kids have. However, there is a solution to this dilemma. A well-known professor, author, and expert on education equity, Matthew Lynch, addresses the problems that schools have with reshaping learning techniques when he stated, â€Å"Public education in America needs teachers who are better trained to meet the needs of specific student populations, understand the necessary role of distance learning, and are willing to speak up to facilitate classroom change† (Lynch). Lynch is discussing the need to change with the times, an area where teachers have sorely failed. This shows that if teachers can adapt to the developing generations, and provide confidence to kids so they can continue to be creative, instead of discouraging students to even try, then those kids can obtain a more valuable education, which will enable them to better achieve their dreams, and reach their destination. Students will have an eagerness to learn, and will put forth a greater attempt in their education if teachers embolden students to be engaged in school and school activities. Color Symbolism, The Invisible Man, By Irving Howe

Color Symbolism In The Invisible Man Lucinda Gainor As described by Irving Howe in his 1952 review of Ralph Ellison’s Invisible Man â€Å"This novel is a soaring and exalted record of a Negro s journey through contemporary America in search of success, companionship, and, finally, himself;†. Invisible Man paints a portrait of self-discovery through a narrator who journeys through the dialects and microaggressions of American Multiculturalism. Artists for years have been fascinated by the implications of the psychological theory of Automatism, it refers to personal analysis, not the judging of images in the subconscious , but the accepting of them as they come into the conscious mind so they can be analyzed. It has always been understood that the unconscious has important messages for the conscious mind, but the former always communicates through images, such as symbols and archetypes, while the latter communicates through language. Symbolism by definition is the practice or art of using a word or an object to convey an abstract idea, and many surrealist artists want their work to be a link between the abstract realities and the physical formations of the material world. This perfectly explains Ellison’s usage of linguistic technique and visual description between creating semblance of cultural andShow MoreRelatedAnalysis Of The Invisible Man By Irving Howe1584 Words   |  7 Pagesolor Symbolism In The Invisible Man Lucinda Gainor As described by Irving Howe in his 1952 review of Ralph Ellison’s Invisible Man â€Å"This novel is a soaring and exalted record of a Negro s journey through contemporary America in search of success, companionship, and, finally, himself;†. Halfcast and Unrelated incidents Essay Example For Students

Halfcast and Unrelated incidents Essay The poems I am comparing are Half-Caste, written by John Agard possibly during the twentieth century, due to that being the era Agard moved to England, encountering racism and misunderstanding of other cultures. The other poem is Unrelated Incidents written by Tom Leonard in 1969, the date is also shown in his poem by mentioning BBC which was created 50 years earlier. Both poems share many similarities such as; they make important points about shared identities as well as individual identity, cultures and the use of phonetics. These poems can also be linked as protest poems, poems that raise and to a degree complain about issues related to their cultural origins. Explain yuself, a repeated phrase throughout Half-Caste, portrays that Agard is complaining about our closed minds, and our ignorance to judge people on their appearance. However, the phrase may also mean that we do not express ourselves vividly. Moreover, yoo scruff, also repeated throughout the stanza of Unrelated Incidents, portrays that Leonard voices his complaints in insults, a different approach from Agard, in turn making this poem least effective from Agards, because not many take notice in something to which they are being offended.  Half-Caste, in my perspective, is about how differently people are treated for being a mixture, Agard describes how wrong it is, using metaphors in his rhetorical questions emphasizing that many things in this world are created using a mixture of things, but they are treated equally yet we treat each other according to our skin colour. However, in a different perspective, Half-Caste could further be about contradicting its readers into awareness that everything is Half-Caste, Picasso, a famous artist, was used with contrasting colours, mix red an green to show that even the famous are not a whole of something. Agard wanted its readers to clearly understand this point as he gives another example of it, Tchaikovsky, famous for his composing, shows that his work is great because he uses a mixture, mix a black key wid a white key. John Agards mother was Portuguese, and his father was black. Agard had his education in Guiana. When Agard moved to England, he became a touring lecturer for the common wealth institute, travelling to schools throughout the UK to promote a better understanding of Caribbean culture. Such experience could have shown Agard that thought and sight can corrupt language, revealing that language and sight can also corrupt thought, which could have affected Agards choice of rhetorical questions, grammar and the stanza structure. This poem may have also been used in other parts of the world due to the reflection of English culture, england weather nearly always half-caste, this implies that our weather is not at a high degrees on a daily basis, implying that England wears different clothes and our houses are made of different material due to the climate difference, which is completely different to the Caribbean culture, where they wear, what we call summer clothes, all year round. Agards culture is also shown in his punctuation, he is not English therefore he does not use English punctuation. This is effective because the reader would recognise this as they are familiar with their own punctuation and ways of writing and expect others to follow in their example, but Agard doesnt do this allowing for the reader to realise that theyve been deceived and that there isnt correct way of punctuation and writing.  The moods in the poem vary from each stanza. In the first stanza the mood is humorous, standing on one leg this could possibly be because Agard had overheard some people talking and wanted to enter the convosation politely, or it could be he wanted to gain their attention by using an intriguing simile. .u21219235c9dbfaad5d3b5335cf8b02aa , .u21219235c9dbfaad5d3b5335cf8b02aa .postImageUrl , .u21219235c9dbfaad5d3b5335cf8b02aa .centered-text-area { min-height: 80px; position: relative; } .u21219235c9dbfaad5d3b5335cf8b02aa , .u21219235c9dbfaad5d3b5335cf8b02aa:hover , .u21219235c9dbfaad5d3b5335cf8b02aa:visited , .u21219235c9dbfaad5d3b5335cf8b02aa:active { border:0!important; } .u21219235c9dbfaad5d3b5335cf8b02aa .clearfix:after { content: ""; display: table; clear: both; } .u21219235c9dbfaad5d3b5335cf8b02aa { display: block; transition: background-color 250ms; webkit-transition: background-color 250ms; width: 100%; opacity: 1; transition: opacity 250ms; webkit-transition: opacity 250ms; background-color: #95A5A6; } .u21219235c9dbfaad5d3b5335cf8b02aa:active , .u21219235c9dbfaad5d3b5335cf8b02aa:hover { opacity: 1; transition: opacity 250ms; webkit-transition: opacity 250ms; background-color: #2C3E50; } .u21219235c9dbfaad5d3b5335cf8b02aa .centered-text-area { width: 100%; position: relative ; } .u21219235c9dbfaad5d3b5335cf8b02aa .ctaText { border-bottom: 0 solid #fff; color: #2980B9; font-size: 16px; font-weight: bold; margin: 0; padding: 0; text-decoration: underline; } .u21219235c9dbfaad5d3b5335cf8b02aa .postTitle { color: #FFFFFF; font-size: 16px; font-weight: 600; margin: 0; padding: 0; width: 100%; } .u21219235c9dbfaad5d3b5335cf8b02aa .ctaButton { background-color: #7F8C8D!important; color: #2980B9; border: none; border-radius: 3px; box-shadow: none; font-size: 14px; font-weight: bold; line-height: 26px; moz-border-radius: 3px; text-align: center; text-decoration: none; text-shadow: none; width: 80px; min-height: 80px; background: url(https://artscolumbia.org/wp-content/plugins/intelly-related-posts/assets/images/simple-arrow.png)no-repeat; position: absolute; right: 0; top: 0; } .u21219235c9dbfaad5d3b5335cf8b02aa:hover .ctaButton { background-color: #34495E!important; } .u21219235c9dbfaad5d3b5335cf8b02aa .centered-text { display: table; height: 80px; padding-left : 18px; top: 0; } .u21219235c9dbfaad5d3b5335cf8b02aa .u21219235c9dbfaad5d3b5335cf8b02aa-content { display: table-cell; margin: 0; padding: 0; padding-right: 108px; position: relative; vertical-align: middle; width: 100%; } .u21219235c9dbfaad5d3b5335cf8b02aa:after { content: ""; display: block; clear: both; } READ: The novel Refugee Boy EssayIn the second stanza, the mood is intolerable, ah rass, an unpleasant Jamaican word, is used to show that Agard is tired of the same close-mindedness of people.  Moreover, the third stanza is more or less the same as the second, however, the forth and final stanza is pleasant and welcoming, an I will tell yu de other half of my story, in my point of view, this tells me that if you talk to him again open-minded he will share his knowledge of other cultures. Rocky Boxing and American Dream Essay Example

Rocky: Boxing and American Dream Paper He reinvents the American Dream by accomplishing things people seem to think are Impossible. Since every person has the opportunity to succeed and achieve this American Dream, our country has been called the land of opportunity. Rocky tremendously demonstrates a person who has attained this dream. Against all odds Rocky obtains the American Dream by using qualities society deems necessary. In the movie Rocky obtains the American Dream. He attains fame and money, knowledge and love and his one passion In life boxing. Rocky obtains fame and money through his boxing career. Early on In his career he was an unknown fighter and fought in bars for barely enough money to live. After years of bar fights he was given his big shot at the Heavy Weight Title. Apollo Creed, the current Heavy Weight Champion, wanted to give an unknown a shot at the title and Rocky was the lucky candidate. He fought Apollo creed and lost by a decision, but it was extremely unclear who actually won the fight. He defeated Apollo against all odds. No one believed Rocky could win except himself. Norman Seasons The Hurricane bears little resemblance to Rocky except that the protagonists of both are prizefighters facing long odds. Rocky was a heartwarming tale of an unknown who makes an unlikely climb to become champion. The Hurricane tells of a contender whose career Is need when he Is snared In a legal trap of revenge and bigotry (Thomas). By defeating Apollo in the rematch, Rocky became the Heavy Weight Champion; if you are the Heavy Weight Champion of the world, you are definitely famous. When Rocky agreed to fight Apollo for the second time, the contract he signed made him a millionaire. Through the fight with Apollo and other fights after he was He avy Weight Champion, he became rich. As he grew older, Rocky obtained knowledge and love. He obtained knowledge by living In the world for many years. As a boy, he was not very Intelligent. HIS dad told him that since he did not have much of a brain he must learn to use his body; this is why he took up boxing. While watching the movie, it is possible to get the impression from Rocky that he dreamed of being intelligent. When he was young he did not understand how important an education was, but as he grew older he realized. This realization hit when he went out to look for a Job and could only find manual labor. Businesses turned him down because he lacked an education, but the interviewers always inquired as to why he did not just box. This showed Rocky that e should stick to what he is best at, and that was boxing. All the knowledge that Rocky obtained he wanted to relay over to his son. He did not want his son to be a fighter, but he wanted his son to go to school and get an education. By looking at the way in which Rocky pushes his son, it is evident that Rocky has obtained knowledge about what Is Important In life. Rocky receives love from a woman he has been chasing Tort years, Adrian. He would always go Into ten pet snoop Tanat seen worker at to court her. He would tell her an extremely corny Joke and then ask her out, but she loud never agree to go out with him. Adrian seemed to have personal problems and this is why she never agreed to go out with him. Around the same time that Rocky received word from Apollo Creed about the fight, she decided to go out with him. The date was not extravagant but it did the Job. From then on they were seeing one another and ended up getting happily married. Rocky was also able to do what he loved most, boxing. He understood that he would never be as good at anything else, but he loved boxing. Many times Adrian asked him to quit, but he never did because he knew he was made to be a fighter. Boxing allowed Rocky to have a Job that he both loved and was great at. Throughout Rocks life the world presented him many hardships. He was born poor, unintelligent and also had problems with boxing and Adrian. Since Rocky was born into lower class society he did not have a good financial background to support him. He worked for an Italian relative that was most likely in the mafia. His Job was to make sure those that owed his boss money paid. Rocky was stuck in an environment without opportunities so he turned to boxing. Rocks intelligence level was also not too high. His dad told him while he was young that he better learn to use his body since he did not have much in his brain. Not only was Rocky less than intelligent, but the environment in which he grew up did not promote what intelligence he possessed. In this world it is extremely hard to support oneself and a family without an education so Rocky had to work hard to find money for his family. Rocks boxing career looked extremely shaky until he received the call from Apollo Creed. His trainer Mackey even thought Rocky was a bum. Rocky lost his locker because Mackey thought his boxing career was finished. When one loses his locker in a no name boxing place in Philadelphia, his or her boxing career is not looking to well. Lastly his love Adrian acted as if he did not exist. Rocky would try to flatter her with his kindness, but she never acknowledge him. What Rocky was provided in life was not much and the rest of his life looked pretty grim because of it. But Rocky achieved the American Dream because he had heart and he was a gentlemen. The heart that Rocky portrayed was amazing. Rocks boxing style represents his heart very well. Rocky was not the fastest, strongest or biggest boxer, UT he possessed mental strength. While Rocky was in the ring he would get beat very badly by his opponent, but Rocky always kept coming after his opponent until he tired him out. After he had tired out his opponent Rocky knocked him out. Because of this tactic he was hit in the head a tremendous amount of times during his career, which caused him to have brain damage later on in life. His opponents would describe him as inhuman and also compared him to a piece of steal since he could get hit so many times and not knocked out. Also throughout his career people had told him that his career was done. People including his wife would always tell him to stop boxing and that he could not win. But Rocky ignored all of their advice and continued to fight when he felt it to be necessary. His courageous heart was seen when he decided to fight the man who had killed his best friend during a boxing match. Rocky went to Russia to train and fight this man. Even though Rocky was told to be over the hill and that he could not win he still went to Russia and fought his opponent. HIS opponent was much younger Ana stronger tan ml. So Tort Rocky to go into Russia, leave all of what he knows, to fight this man shows extreme courage. Rocky defeated the Russian in a great boxing match. It probably was Rocks greatest fight of his career. the epic battles with Joe Frazier and George Foreman (Early). A real life comparison can be Muhammad All. Who beat both Frazier and Foreman against all odds. Rocky was also an extreme gentlemen. He was always polite to everyone. In the movie sometimes it is possible to get the impression that his gentleness is because if his intelligence level. One great example of Rocks kindness was when he went to a Catholic priest before he fought Apollo Creed.

Live Forever essays

Live Forever essays Modern science wants to achieve the impossible, life that never ends. This is a great idea to some but the ways that are proposed are downright insane. While most people are all for immortality I have a hard time volunteering when there exists so many flaws. If you take the time to stop and think about it its not even a question as to why this goal has yet to be accomplished. If you wanted to build a house wouldnt you first master one for your dog? Surely starting small and working your way up is a good idea. Science has other plans. Theyve already started a solution to which they dont know the whole process. While immortality may seem great there are many reasons why now is not the time to start worrying about it? Funding is the name of this game. The battle isnt about living forever its how to pay for it. The United States spends millions of dollars every year on a defense budget. Weapons development gets huge funding. This is the same government that refuses to fund research for immortality. Perhaps living longer isnt as much fun as making other live shorter. Without out the government aboard the decision of life has been left to the states. We all know New Hampshire has decided to live free or die buy how much are they willing to pay. This living forever thing could ruin the country. Sure California passed prop 71 giving billions for stem cell research but where does that leave Illinois (Economic study demonstrates Proposition 71 benefits to California's economy 1)? They decided that living forever costs way too much when they defeated a proposition for stem cell research (Illinois Senate blocks stem cell funding 1). Most states have yet to make a decision. Are we all destined to be subje ct to a nation made up of 100% Californians? If this is true is it really worth living at all? What motivated California to spend all that money? Where did they get all their m ...

Research methods - Assignment Example sistent health anxiety not only causes great suffering for the patient and those around them but is also costly in terms of higher medical care utilization (Barsky, Ettner, Horsky & Bates, 2001). Hence, it remains a priority to understand the aetiology and maintenance of hypochondriasis and to develop effective treatments. Although DSM-IV-TR (2000) currently classifies hypochondriasis as a somatoform disorder it has been argued that the underlying cognitive processes are more consistent with those in anxiety disorders (Mayou, Kirmayer, Simon, Kroenke, & Sharpe, 2005; Noyes, 1999; Olatunji, 2009; Deacon &Abramowitz, 2009,) and thus it has been conceptualized as such for the purposes of treatment (Paul, Warwick, Deale, 2003; David Clark et al., 1998; Wells, 1997). Schizophrenia is a chronic, severe, and disabling mental illness that has a particularly negative impact on patients with the disorder. For example, compared to normal people, schizophrenics will often face significant problems with developing social relationships, self-care, and are often unable to hold down a job. As a result, everybody knows that they are usually unemployed, socially isolated, and dependent on the financial support of family or public welfare. It is, therefore, imperative that mental health professionals develop effective treatments to tackle the problem. A number of different treatments have been developed to target the problem of Schizophrenia. These include antipsychotic medications, electroconvulsive therapy, cognitive-behavioral therapy, family education and therapy, and social skills training (Rosenberg & Kosslyn, 2014). Many Schizophrenics don’t like taking medication, usually because of the many distressing and long term negative side-effects. Cons equently, I would recommend treating Schizophrenia with psychological interventions, rather than medication. An experiment was carried out to examine the impact of drinking alcohol on driving ability. One hundred participants took

Discussion board homework - Coursework Example The outdoor, fitness and aviation segments contributed to 63% of the revenue. A loss in foreign currency has been realized of $ 44 million compared to a gain of $ 12 million last year, and the company is projecting earnings of about $ 2.88 billion in terms of revenue. The outdoor segment and auto segment have a decline in revenue of 10% and 11% respectively. For the auto sector, it has been because of a fall in the Personal Navigation Device (PND) industry, as a result of competition from the mobile industry and other competitors. The article remains significant in the essay as it not only provided crucial financial information but indicates the diverse segments where the company excels. With the above research, comprehensive business analysis can be put in place for Garmin, and this can aid in outlining the areas of strength and weaknesses. It is because the figures clearly depict the revenue generated from each segment. The data above can thus be used to come up with a strategy primarily to strengthen the areas where the company is likely to maximize its net income. For instance, it can concentrate in the fitness segment that has gained popularity, and that is likely to generate supernatural

Ashford University Essay Example for Free

Ashford University Essay Pornography is very addictive and can destroy someone’s marriage and life. This addiction can, and in many cases, lead to someone committing very serious sexual crimes. People who look at porn often look for more perversity in different areas. The resources from which I found my information on is the Ashford Library and a couple credible internet sites. There are several reasons why people turn to porn. Some reasons are for seeing their own fantasies acted out because they can’t act them out with their own partner / spouse, some people want to avoid intimacy within their own relationship for personal reasons, some just do it for personal pleasure. But for whatever reason, there is always a consequence that will follow. According to the American Academy of Matrimonial Lawyers (AAML), 56% of divorces occur because one spouse keeps returning to a pornographic website. These men / women feel as though they are being compared to these people in the pornographic films or pictures. Whether it’s the man or the woman who is watching porn inside the marriage, in most cases, they are doing this against their spouses wishes. This leads to lack of intimacy, low self esteem, shame, and lack of trust. This also makes the spouse feel as if they are no longer found attractive. â€Å"Just ask your spouse how confident they feel being naked in front of you after you’ve looked at pornography and you’ll understand this one.† ( http://www.debttolife.com ). Many people say that they introduce porn into their marriage to spice their love life up but in the end all this does is slowly destroy the intimacy that was there. After watching pornography people’s views are completely changed. After being exposed to R-  rated material men no longer see their spouse as they once did. They look at them now more as an object rather than an individual that they love. Studies have shown (http://www.webmd.com ) that pornography can be just the same as an addiction. Some experts who have studied porn addiction have called the effects of porn on the brain toxic and also compared it to the deadly drug cocaine (WebMD, 2014). These addicts no longer just suffer from nights without sleep or unpaid credit card bills but they are also becoming more engaged in group sex and sexual contact with animals. Other effects that have surfaced from pornography include acting out what they have seen in porn material, sexual acts towards children both boys and girls, and rape using foreign materials / objects. (The Forerunner, 1991). Child pornography is a disgusting fact that we hear about every day. â€Å"Child pornography is the visual depiction of sexually explicit conduct includes acts such as intercourse, bestiality and masturbation as well as lascivious exhibition of the genitals or pubic area.† (Pulido, 2013). Recently, there were 71 people, 70 men and 1 woman, who were arrested in child pornography charges. Among that 70 included a police officer, a paramedic, a rabbi, an airline pilot, an architect, and a Boy Scout leader. Many of these people who were arrest had search the phrases â€Å"real child rape† and â€Å"family sex† into their computers search engines turning up extremely disturbing images (Hays, 2014). With so many people connected to the internet it has made this type of crime so easy. Perverts and pedophiles search the web everyday to find new victims. â€Å"The victims are getting younger, and the images more violent.†(Flack). When a picture of a child circles the internet going from one person to another, that child is being re-abused. No child should have to endear that type of suffering, never! A peer to – peer, also known as P2P, file sharing network, that allows people to share music, videos, and pictures, was under investigation by authorizes and had 3,000 child pornography consumers with tens of thousands of child pornographic images  traded. â€Å"The investigation began after agents, using software available to law enforcement, were able to trace f iles of child pornography to an I.P. address on a computer used by Brian Fanelli, 54, who until January was the police chief of Mount Pleasant, N.Y† (Berger, 2014). Another, earlier, report back in 2009, out of all the arrest made on P2P users, 33 percent of those arrested had images of children three years old and younger and 42 percent had images of children showing some type of sexual explicit material. (Pulido, 2013). Virtue Ethics is â€Å"A persons character is the totality of his character traits. Our character traits can be good, bad or somewhere in between. They can be admirable or not. The admirable character traits, the marks of perfection in character, are called virtues, their opposites are vices.†(Garrett, 2005)., I believe that this theory is a big part of someone who is willing to put everything at risk for something so degrading and disrespectful to themselves. A persons character says a lot about who that person is and what that person may be capable of doing. Not everyone has good virtue ethics and this is when one’s character and moral traits come in play. One’s character is shown through their actions an d behavior, whether this is being good or bad. One’s moral values are shown through their honesty, their loyalty, and their respect for others. As we all know pornography is very popular but it can also cause serious problems. Many people look at the disturbing images not thinking about the consequences, they are only thinking about what is happening at that moment and at that moment that’s what they want to do. I look at this issue using the deontology theory. â€Å"Rather than looking at the consequences of an act, deontology looks at the reason for which an act is done, and the rule according to which one chooses to act.† (Mosser, 2013). I take that as someone doing something on impulse rather than thinking about the consequences that they will face when they act upon their decision. If someone knew that they was going to destroy their marriage by watching porn, if someone knew that by watching porn it would make them fall behind on their bills, or  if someone knew that by watching porn they would go out and commit sexual crimes, do you think they would have continued or even started looking at these image s, I think not! Why is There so Much Poverty? Essay examples -- Essays on Poverty

Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  With the thought of poverty, several issues come to mind: money, crime, health and welfare. These are the top four concerns when responding to the issue of poverty in our nation as a whole. Each presents problems and solutions, but addressing them in the face of government is difficult; for every good point or action, there is a negative reaction affecting both pro and con supporters.   Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  The most prevalent means of measuring poverty have been, and continue to be, bench marks related to money. Poverty lines are used to measure absolute and relative poverty in terms of incomes and affordability. Such measurements are relatively easy to make and quantify. However, lack of money is more a symptom of poverty rather than its cause. In most cases the poor are not without some income. What they lack is the ability to accumulate assets, which is a key ingredient to the creation of wealth and breaking the cycle of poverty (6).   Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  In addition to low earnings, the prime reason for the inability to increase funds and thus increase security of income is that profits or potential savings are often pocketed by moneylenders who charge lofty interest rates, by formal and informal regulatory and enforcement agents/organizations who demand bribes or extort protection money, and by middlemen or other stronger business partners who exploit the poor because they lack market information or the ability to use the market information to increase their own incomes. Another key that prevents the poor from raising capital is that they are often forced to purchase public goods and services at a much higher cost that are readily available to other groups in society at market or below market prices(6).   Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Some effects of poverty are not easily understood, and are therefore sometimes mistakenly considered the cause of poverty. For example, studies link poverty to crime. In many cases, most crime leads to poverty and not the other way around. Crime indirectly increases poverty in many ways, even simple burglary or mugging. A high crime rate drives businesses out of neighborhoods. This eliminates both availability of products and services, as well as sources of jobs. Further, those who do stay find it necessary to charge higher prices to compensate for losses due to thievery, and hig... ...than a poverty-level income, and as a last resort, government should provide temporary jobs to unemployed workers (4, 5).   Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Their critics say that guaranteeing jobs for all Americans or providing public sector jobs for those who cannot find employment elsewhere, would be prohibitively expensive, and that substantially raising the minimum wage would be counterproductive as many employers would be forced to lay off workers. They also fight the thought that the best way to reduce poverty hinges on something that government cannot provide: motivation and hard work. But in our free market economy, government should not be the employer of last resort. We need less government, not more of it, and we certainly do not want millions of Americans in makeshift government jobs (4).   Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  In the United States alone, 45% of all Americans are considered to be living in poverty, and with that statistic come many causes and effects. We have solutions to these problems, but utilizing them may not be easy or quick. It just takes a strong government and even stronger support from the population to tailor our approach to fit the needs of our society.

Development Project – comparing Canada and Kenya

Brief: In this project, I have been asked to show the development of two countries. The information was researched from books, resources, internet etc. Method: The two countries that I have chosen to write about Is Canada and Kenya. I have chosen Canada because of its interesting facts and the fact that it is a developed country. The other country I have chosen is Kenya, I choose this because it is a developing country and I wanted to see the similarities and differences between them. I also wanted to choose Kenya because of its interesting features and cultures. There many factors to focus on, in this project so I will both show my findings and research in forms of tables, pie charts, bar charts. TABLE OF FINDINGS I have researched my two countries using the internet. I then printed this information out to show that I have done my research. To make life much simpler, I collect the necessary parts of the research, and complied this into one easy to read â€Å"Table of Findings† The 12 Factors As you can see, I have chosen 12 factors to compare the two countries: I have chosen Roadways, Railways and Airports because I wanted to see the transport difference. I was hoping this would then show the huge difference of how developed one country is and how underdeveloped the other is. A MEDC would have a high number of transport facilities because of their wealth. A LEDC would have a small amount of transport facilities. The effect of not having these transport facilities could mean that they could be losing valuable money. This is because when they have the produce e.g. food, products. There is no way in which they can transport it to other parts of the world. This is shown as Canada has 1.042,300 km of roadways, whereas Kenya has only 63,547 km of Roadway. Meaning Canada has a superior development over Kenya. I chose Internet users, Telephone Mobile Cellular and Internet host because of it interesting fact and figures. I was hoping this information/research would show how modern the country is with new electronic gadgets. I think that, it would be recommended that a country have a high technologic wealth, because the 21st century is all gadgets and tech. A MEDC would have a high number of communications and gadgets because they can afford to have telephone lines and other sources of power. Whereas a LEDC has a much lower number simply because the wealth is not there and they cannot afford to have the sources of power e.g. Telephone exchanges and telephone lines. In the table, you can Cleary see that Canada has far more internet users, having over 25,000mill. Whereas the developing country Kenya, only has 3.36mill. As Canada has the higher number of users, they are able to trade with overseas businesses, and increase their economy rate. Kenya has a select minority of Users meaning there are only some people trading with overseas countries. Meaning that economy rate could be much higher, if only they were able to boost the amount of trade happening around the world. I have chosen Oil Consumptions, Exports, GDP per Capita because I was hoping it would show the wealth of each of my country. As I have information about their trading and the county's average pay. The MEDC's in the world have a high economy rate because of its power and trading. Although Kenya trade with other countries it still has a lower rate proving it is a LEDC. I have chosen Birth rate, Literacy, and Infant Mortality because: Birth rate: This should show how developed the country is because the lower the Birth rate the more developed the country is. This is because a higher birth rate means a higher population. This creates other critical issues, to do with accommodation and the country's wealth. However the lower this outcome is the better because most of these issues are evaded and therefore a more powerful and wealthy nation. Literacy: As shown in the â€Å"Table of Findings† the Literacy rate for Canada is very high meaning that there educational system has been effective. This also mean that higher salary earnings for new qualified employed of the future. This in turn would boost the GDP per Capita because the higher earnings would increase the average. However, for Kenya it is much different story because there Literacy rate. They only have 90.60% male, and a 79.97% female literacy rate, which means that; there education system is only applied to a selected minority (only the rich.) A MEDC would have a very high percentage because they are able to fund schools and other resources to educate students and adults. An LEDC has minimum funds for education, so it's GDP and economy rate would be lower. Infant Mortality: Infant mortality rate is the number of newborns under the age of five, divided by the number of live births during the year. As you can see from the information produced, Canada has a very low Infant Mortality Rate. This is very good statistics because they have more live birth than death. As a MEDC, these statistics indicate that the health care system is of high standards. They are clean, hygienic and have high success rate. Kenya however has a very high Infant Mortality rate. Meaning that they have an unsuccessful birth rate and a very high child death rate, This LEDC has very poor health standard for hospitals. The rich may have private doctors for their own use, but for the large population, Hospital health care is unhygienic and unfunded. This means that they have a very low success rate. My graph shows me that Canada has a high bar meaning that it has a very high GDP per Capita. However, Kenya has a low bar meaning that it has a very poor GDP per Capita rate. This means that on average the salary in Kenya is only 1,600 per person, for an economy to grow this number needs to increase. This is caused by dangerous, underpaid jobs, which decrease the rate of GDP per Capita. Therefore, this indicates me that Kenya is less developed whereas Canada id much more developed. The effect of this are- economy won't increase, meaning it will be harder for them to develop. This information researched over on the internet was quite surprising for Kenya. I was expecting the Exports rate for it to be much higher as they are trading with foreign countries, with food and products. This means it is less developed. I think I have also chosen good countries to write about, because one is very underdeveloped and the other has a huge difference than Kenya. As you can see from this bar chart, you can immediately see that Canada has a bigger bar chart. So what does this mean? This means that, Canada has 5.221 million more telephone receivers than Kenya. Thus, Kenya has less telephone communication than Canada. The effect of this are that they less communication with other countries, and less trading. This graph is showing the amount of internet users there are in Kenya and Canada. As you can clearly see, Canada has far more users than Kenya. This advantage can be very useful in the 21st century, because most people interact using social networking sites, and this can have a damaging effect on the countries that do not have many users. This is because business happens on the internet, and products, which Kenya make and grow, can be bought over the internet, but not having many users means they are losing lots of money. Measuring Development This table shows a comparison of the two countries. It ranks each country by the factors chosen, the better the number for each factor, it is ranked as 1. If it is worse than it is ranked 2. It can be ranked by how ever many country's you write about. In this case, it is only 2 countries, but in other tables, it can be 5 etc. Therefore, the rank for 5 countries is added up and the lower the numbers are the most developed. However, the higher the number the less developed it is. Conclusion Now that I have finished my project, I have analysed all my data and have concluded that Kenya is far more underdeveloped/developing than Canada. This is because they are not branching out amongst other countries through the internet and other communication. This can be shown it the â€Å"Internet Users Pie Chart† it clearly shows the small minority of people using the internet. From all my data and analysis, I can confidently say Canada is a MEDC. Whereas, Kenya is an LEDC. This is shown by the pie charts I have done. The Exports Bar chart has clearly shown that Canada has far more export income than Kenya, in fact more than most countries. This is because of its communication with other countries and nation. This is again referring to the amount of Internet users, each country has to trade. Kenya is of course a developing country, it has a high Birth rate, and a high Infant Mortality. However, Kenya can change. There are key points, for them to become developed. * Equal Societies- There are different tribes and cultures within Kenya, and if they are to become equal to an equal society, it would save money with no more fighting. (Buildings from fighting won't have too be restored) * Freedom from Poverty- Poverty is almost like an accessory in Kenya. It won't go away until they act on it. They need support from other Nations and countries (through communication) to bring down the rate of deaths from this killer. Evaluation How could I of improved my project? I have had many lessons for this project. Unfortunately, I did not finish within the lessons, and so I had to do it as homework. I think I need the extra homework extension, because I did not manage my time wisely. Otherwise, I would have finished it within the time bracket. I think that I could have presented my work neater on paper, as I had to type it up on the computer. More/different factors? I think that I should have picked more factors to do with population. This is because I only have information about Birth rate, and not Death rate or Life Expectancy. I think telephone mobile cellular was inappropriate because I did not know what it was. Presentation of Data? I think that I should have presented some of the data in a population pyramid. This is an easier way of telling whether it is developed on not, because of it shape. Inaccurate or surprising factors? I did not find any inaccurate date, because I used up to date figures for my project. I was very surprised with some of the factors to do with Kenya. Exports were very surprising because I would have expected this to be quite high. They normally trade food product with many countries and given this information, I was expecting it to be high.

Kurt Vonnegut And Roald Dahl - 882 Words

Kurt Vonnegut and Roald Dahl are two very unique people. They are often described as quirky, weird, and downright zany. If they were stuck in a crowd, they would easily stand out. Although they are very different from others, they share many similarities with each other. Roald Dahl and Kurt Vonnegut are two divorced, agnostic authors who fought in and survived World War II. First of all, Vonnegut and Dahl both grew up in religious families. However, as most people do, they outgrew some of their families’ beliefs as they became older. One of the outgrown beliefs was their religion. Kurt Vonnegut’s family were Christians, and he grew up following the word of God. However, as he got older, he converted to agnosticism. In Vonnegut’s book, Palm Sunday, he states, â€Å"I would like to recapture what has been lost. Why? Because I, as a Christ-worshipping agnostic, have seen so much un-Christian impatience with the poor encouraged by the quotation ‘For the poor a lways ye have with you’’’ (qtd. in Beiler). He admits to being agnostic, but still says he loves Christ. In Roald Dahl’s case, he grew up catholic and even attended a catholic school (â€Å"Roald Dahl Biography†). Like Vonnegut, Dahl converted after realizing the hypocrisy of the Christian faith when he saw pastors preach about forgiveness one day, and then flog a boy for a small offense the next. He wrote in his autobiography, â€Å"I knew very well that only the night before this preacher had shown neither forgiveness nor mercy in
